IELTS is valid for 2 years from the date of your test. This post covers everything you need to know about IELTS validity — when it expires, what to do if it has, and whether your score can be extended.
This is one of the most common questions Pakistani IELTS candidates ask — and the answer is straightforward. But the implications are not always obvious. Read on to understand exactly how IELTS validity works, when it becomes a problem, and what your options are.
After that, most institutions will not accept it.
How Long Is IELTS Valid?
Your IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) is valid for 2 years from the date you sat the test — not from the date you received your results, and not from the date you submitted your application. The clock starts on test day.
If you sat your IELTS test on 15 June 2024, your result is valid until 15 June 2026. Any application submitted after that date using this result will likely be rejected — even if you scored a Band 9.
The 2-year validity applies to all IELTS test types — Academic, General Training, UKVI, and Life Skills. There are no exceptions based on score, test type, or country.
Why Does IELTS Expire After 2 Years?
The 2-year validity period exists because language proficiency changes over time. A score from three years ago may no longer accurately reflect your current English ability — particularly if you have had limited exposure to English since the test. Universities, immigration authorities, and professional bodies want assurance that your English level is current, not historical.
This is not unique to IELTS — TOEFL and most other English proficiency tests have similar validity periods. It is a standard requirement across the industry, not an arbitrary rule.
Do Any Institutions Accept Expired IELTS Scores?
Very rarely — and never as a general policy. Some institutions may exercise discretion in exceptional circumstances, but this is at their sole discretion and cannot be relied upon. A handful of universities have accepted slightly expired scores (e.g. 2 years and 1 month) in specific situations — but this is the exception, not the rule, and you cannot plan around it.
The safest position is: treat 2 years as a hard deadline. If your result expires before your application is submitted and processed, retake the test.
For most universities and immigration applications, your IELTS must be valid at the time your application is processed — not just at the time it is submitted. If there is a processing delay and your score expires during that period, it may be rejected. Plan with a margin — aim to have at least 6 months of validity remaining when you submit any important application.
What to Do If Your IELTS Has Expired
There is only one option: retake the test. IELTS scores cannot be extended, renewed, or appealed past the 2-year validity period. Once expired, the Test Report Form is no longer accepted by any institution as valid proof of English proficiency.
- Register with British Council or IDP Pakistan. Both are official IELTS providers in Pakistan. Check test date availability at your nearest centre.
- Prepare before you rebook. Do not book the test immediately — assess your current level first and prepare until you are confident of reaching your target band score. Paying the full fee twice because of insufficient preparation is avoidable.
- Target the same band or higher. If your previous score was close to your target, focused preparation on your weakest modules should get you there. If you fell short last time, identify specifically what went wrong and address those areas.
- Check whether OSR is an option. If only one module score has dropped or is borderline, the IELTS One Skill Retake may be available — see the section below.
Can I Retake One Module Instead of the Full Test?
Yes — through IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR). This allows you to retake a single module within 60 days of your original test date, rather than resitting the full four-module exam. It is useful if you scored well on three modules but underperformed on one.
| Feature | Full IELTS Retake | IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) |
|---|---|---|
| Modules tested | All 4 — Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking | 1 module only — your choice |
| Time window | Any time after your previous test | Within 60 days of original test |
| Cost | Full fee — approx PKR 71,920 | Lower fee — approx PKR 25,000–35,000 |
| Validity | 2 years from new test date | 2 years from OSR date |
| Accepted by all institutions? | Yes | Not all — check before booking |
Always confirm with your target university or visa authority that they accept OSR results before booking. Some institutions — particularly for UK visas and healthcare professional registration — only accept full test results.
IELTS Validity by Purpose — University, Visa, Professional
The 2-year rule is universal, but how strictly it is enforced and when it becomes critical depends on your specific purpose.
| Purpose | Validity Required | Key Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| University admissions (UK, Canada, Australia) | Valid at time of enrolment — not just application | If your course starts more than 2 years after your test, you may need to retake even if your application was accepted |
| UK Student Visa | Valid at time of visa application | UKVI test required for some visa categories — standard IELTS not accepted |
| Canada Express Entry / PR | Valid at time of ITA (Invitation to Apply) | Points are only awarded for a valid score — an expired score scores zero points |
| Australia Skilled Migration | Valid at time of visa lodgement | Scores submitted with an EOI must remain valid until the visa is granted in some cases |
| Professional registration (NMC, AHPRA, GMC) | Valid at time of application | Healthcare bodies are particularly strict — no exceptions for expired scores |
Always verify the exact validity requirement with the institution, visa authority, or professional body directly. Requirements are updated periodically and this table reflects general guidance as of 2026.
