IELTS General vs Academic comes down to one question: which test does the organisation receiving your result ask for? Academic is usually for university study and professional registration, and General Training is usually for migration and work. Both test Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and only Reading and Writing are different.
This guide explains the difference between the two, which one is harder, the exceptions that catch Pakistani candidates out (Canada Express Entry, nursing registration and UK visas), and how to choose before you pay the test fee.

“Academic for study, General for migration” is only a starting point. The receiving organisation’s wording decides.
What Is IELTS Academic?
IELTS Academic checks whether your English is ready for study at university, undergraduate or postgraduate. It uses the kind of language you meet in lectures, textbooks, essays and seminars, and its texts are more complex and abstract than General Training’s.
- Who takes it: university and postgraduate applicants, and professionals registering with a regulator that asks for it.
- Reading: three long texts taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. The questions test argument, opinion and implied meaning, not only facts.
- Writing Task 1: describe a graph, chart, table, map or process in at least 150 words.
- Writing Task 2: an essay of at least 250 words responding to a point of view, an argument or a problem.
- Listening and Speaking: exactly the same as General Training.
What Is IELTS General Training?
IELTS General Training checks your English for everyday life and work in an English-speaking country: reading notices and workplace documents, writing letters and following ordinary conversations.
- Who takes it: people applying for migration, work visas and permanent residence, and for some school, vocational or training courses abroad.
- Reading: several shorter everyday texts (notices, adverts, timetables, workplace documents), then one longer text on a topic of general interest.
- Writing Task 1: a letter of at least 150 words: formal, semi-formal or informal, depending on the situation you’re given.
- Writing Task 2: an essay of at least 250 words, usually on a more everyday topic.
- Listening and Speaking: exactly the same as Academic.

Both versions take about 2 hours 45 minutes and use the same 0–9 band scale.
Which Is Harder: IELTS General or Academic?
Neither one is simply easier. Each is harder in a different way, and for three of the four skills there’s no difference at all.
Reading
Academic Reading uses harder texts, with more difficult vocabulary and a more complex style. General Training texts are easier to read, but you need more correct answers to get the same band.

So 30 correct answers is, on average, Band 7 in Academic Reading but Band 6 in General Training. The content is easier; the scoring is stricter.
Writing Task 1
This one depends on you. Academic Task 1 (describing a graph or a process) follows a clear method once you’ve learnt it, and many students find it the most predictable part of the test. General Training Task 1 (a letter) needs the right tone for the situation, and some students find that harder than describing data. There’s no answer that’s true for everyone.
Writing Task 2, Listening and Speaking
Listening and Speaking are the same tests in both versions, and Task 2 is the same kind of essay, so the preparation for all three is the same.
If an organisation asks for Academic and you take General Training, your result won’t be accepted for that application, however high it is. The right test is the one that will be accepted.
Exceptions That Catch Pakistani Candidates Out
Studying in Canada, then applying for PR
A Canadian university may ask for IELTS Academic for admission. That result won’t count for Express Entry later: IRCC requires IELTS General Training and doesn’t accept IELTS One Skill Retake. If you plan to study in Canada and then apply for permanent residence with IELTS, you’ll need a General Training result at that stage, even though Academic got you into university. Express Entry results must also be less than two years old, so see our guide to how long IELTS is valid.
Nurses, doctors and other professionals
A professional regulator can name the test version, the minimum score in each skill, whether results from two sittings can be combined, whether IELTS for UKVI is needed and whether it accepts One Skill Retake. These rules vary by profession and country, and they change. Read your regulator’s current English-language policy instead of copying a score from a general table online.
UK visas
Not every UK application needs IELTS for UKVI, and not every UK route needs the same test. The test, the level and the approved-centre rule depend on your exact visa route, your sponsor and any separate course or regulator requirement. Start with GOV.UK’s Secure English Language Test (SELT) guidance, then confirm with your sponsor before booking.
Foundation, pathway and vocational courses
The course provider decides which test it accepts. Ask for the exact test name and the minimum overall and skill scores in writing.
One result, two organisations
If a university and a visa authority will both use your result, check both. One may accept a result the other doesn’t.

Most of your preparation is the same for both versions, because Listening, Speaking and Writing Task 2 don’t change. The difference is in two places.
