Important Note on Accuracy

This calculator uses the official published IELTS raw-to-band conversion tables from British Council and IDP. Actual test results may vary slightly between test versions due to equating — a statistical process used to ensure fairness across different test papers. How Your Overall IELTS Band Score Is Calculated

Your overall IELTS band score is the average of your four module scores — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. However, IELTS does not use standard rounding. It applies its own rounding rules which can significantly affect your final result.

Average of 4 ScoresOfficial Overall BandExample
Ends in .00Exact whole number6.00 → 6.0
Ends in .25Rounded up to .56.25 → 6.5
Ends in .50Exact half band6.50 → 6.5
Ends in .75Rounded up to next whole6.75 → 7.0
Ends in .1 or .2Rounded down to whole6.1 → 6.0
Ends in .6 or .7Rounded down to .56.6 → 6.5
Ends in .8 or .9Rounded up to next whole6.8 → 7.0

This is why a score of 6.75 becomes 7.0 but 6.6 becomes only 6.5. The rounding rules are asymmetric — understanding them helps you set smarter target scores in each module.

Why This Matters for Your Preparation

If you need an overall 7.0 and your current average is 6.6, you do not need to improve every module equally. Raising your weakest module by half a band can push your average to 6.75 — which rounds up to 7.0. Strategic preparation — ideally inside a guided IELTS course that focuses on your weakest module — is more efficient than trying to improve everything at once.

Listening Raw Score to Band Score Table

The Listening test has 40 questions. Each correct answer is 1 mark. The same conversion table applies to both Academic and General Training candidates — there is no difference between the two for Listening.

Raw Score (out of 40)Band ScoreRaw Score (out of 40)Band Score
39 – 409.023 – 246.0
37 – 388.520 – 225.5
35 – 368.016 – 195.0
33 – 347.513 – 154.5
30 – 327.010 – 124.0
26 – 296.56 – 93.5
256.04 – 53.0

Reading Raw Score to Band Score Table

The Reading test also has 40 questions worth 1 mark each. Unlike Listening, the conversion tables differ between Academic and General Training — General Training typically requires more correct answers to achieve the same band score at higher levels.

Academic Reading

Raw Score (out of 40)Band ScoreRaw Score (out of 40)Band Score
39 – 409.023 – 256.0
37 – 388.519 – 225.5
35 – 368.015 – 185.0
33 – 347.513 – 144.5
30 – 327.010 – 124.0
27 – 296.58 – 93.5
266.05 – 73.0

General Training Reading

Raw Score (out of 40)Band ScoreRaw Score (out of 40)Band Score
409.029 – 316.0
398.525 – 285.5
37 – 388.020 – 245.0
35 – 367.516 – 194.5
33 – 347.011 – 154.0
326.56 – 103.5

Note: At Band 7 and above, General Training Reading requires more correct answers than Academic Reading to achieve the same band score. This reflects the difference in text complexity between the two modules.

How Writing and Speaking Are Scored

Unlike Listening and Reading, Writing and Speaking do not have a raw score. They are assessed by trained IELTS examiners against official band descriptors (see our full IELTS band score guide for what each band represents) across four criteria — each worth 25% of the module score.

Writing — 4 Marking Criteria

CriterionWhat It Assesses
Task Achievement / Task ResponseDid you fully answer the question? Did you address all parts?
Coherence and CohesionIs your writing logically organised? Do ideas flow with appropriate linking?
Lexical ResourceDo you use a range of vocabulary accurately and naturally?
Grammatical Range and AccuracyDo you use a variety of sentence structures with minimal errors?

Speaking — 4 Marking Criteria

CriterionWhat It Assesses
Fluency and CoherenceCan you speak at length without excessive hesitation? Are ideas connected?
Lexical ResourceDo you use varied and precise vocabulary naturally?
Grammatical Range and AccuracyDo you use complex structures correctly?
PronunciationIs your speech clear and easy to understand? Do you use natural stress and rhythm?

Writing and Speaking scores are reported in whole and half bands only (e.g. 6.0, 6.5, 7.0). Examiners assign the band that best describes your performance overall — not an average of sub-scores.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
Your overall band score is the average of your four module scores — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The average is then rounded to the nearest whole or half band using IELTS’s official rounding rules. An average of 6.25 rounds up to 6.5; an average of 6.75 rounds up to 7.0; an average of 6.1 rounds down to 6.0.
Is the IELTS band calculator accurate?
This calculator uses the official published conversion tables from British Council and IDP and applies the correct IELTS rounding formula. It is highly accurate for estimating your band score. However, actual test results may vary slightly between test versions due to equating — a statistical process IELTS uses to ensure fairness across different papers.
How many correct answers do I need for a band 7 in Listening?
You typically need 30 to 32 correct answers out of 40 to achieve a Band 7 in IELTS Listening. This applies to both Academic and General Training candidates, as the Listening conversion table is the same for both.
Is the Reading band score different for Academic and General Training?
Yes. The conversion tables for Academic and General Training Reading are different. General Training Reading typically requires more correct answers to achieve the same band score at Band 7 and above, because the Academic module uses more complex texts. At lower bands (5.0 and below), the difference is smaller.
Can I get a 6.5 overall if I score 5.0 in one module?
Yes, it is mathematically possible — but many universities and visa programmes set a minimum score per module, not just an overall band. For example, a UK visa may require no band below 5.5 even if your overall is 6.5. Always check the specific requirements of your destination institution or visa category.
What is the highest possible IELTS band score?
The highest IELTS band score is 9.0 — described as an “Expert User” who has fully operational command of the language. Band 9 in Listening requires 39 or 40 correct answers. Band 9 overall requires an average of 8.75 or above across all four modules.
Do I lose marks for wrong answers in IELTS?
No. IELTS does not deduct marks for incorrect answers in Listening or Reading. Each correct answer is worth one mark, and unanswered or incorrect questions simply score zero. Always attempt every question — there is no penalty for guessing.
