Free English Level Test
25 grammar and vocabulary questions that get harder as you go, from beginner (A1) to advanced (C1). You get an estimate of your English level, what to work on next and the courses that fit it.
- 5 sections, A1 to C1
- Marked straight away
- No name or number needed
How the test works
- There are 5 sections, one for each level: A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1. Each section has 5 questions, and they get harder as you go.
- You pass a section with at least 3 of its 5 right. The test stops at the first section you don’t pass, so it can be shorter than 25 questions.
- Don’t guess. If you don’t know an answer, choose “I don’t know”: a lucky guess only makes your result less accurate.
- Every test is different. The questions are picked at random from 75, and our website marks them.

What the English levels mean
The levels are those of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which schools, universities and employers around the world use to describe language ability.
| Level | What you can usually do | IELTS, roughly |
|---|---|---|
| A1 Beginner | Understand and use everyday words and very simple sentences: introduce yourself and ask and answer simple questions. | Below Band 4 |
| A2 Elementary | Handle short, routine conversations about shopping, directions, your family and your work. | Below Band 4 |
| B1 Intermediate | Deal with most everyday situations and talk about familiar topics, your experiences and your plans. | Band 4 to 5 |
| B2 Upper intermediate | Discuss a wide range of topics in detail and follow the main ideas of complex texts. | Band 5.5 to 6.5 |
| C1 Advanced | Use English flexibly and accurately for study and work, including on complex and abstract topics. | Band 7 to 8 |
The IELTS column follows IELTS’s own comparison with the CEFR. This test checks grammar and vocabulary only, so it can’t predict an IELTS band. Above C1 there is C2 (Proficient), which a short test like this can’t measure, so it doesn’t claim to.
How the test is marked
Each section has 3 grammar questions and 2 vocabulary questions at that level, chosen at random from a bank of 75. You pass a section with at least 3 of its 5 right, and your result is the last section you passed. Because the test stops at the first section you don’t pass, one lucky guess on a hard question can’t push your result up.
The questions and answers are kept on our website, not in this page, and each set of 5 can only be answered once. That’s why nobody can look up the answers, and why the result means something. We don’t save your answers, and we don’t ask for your name, email or phone number.
Questions about the level test
Is the English level test free?
Yes, it’s completely free and there’s no sign-up. You don’t need to give your name, email or phone number.
How long does the English level test take?
About 10 minutes if you answer all 25 questions. The test stops at the first section you don’t pass, so it’s often shorter.
How accurate is the result?
It’s a quick estimate of your grammar and vocabulary, from A1 to C1 on the CEFR scale. It doesn’t test speaking, listening, reading or writing, so treat the result as a starting point. Your full level, including speaking, is checked in the free 30-minute demo class.
Do I get a certificate?
No. A certificate from a short online test wouldn’t prove your level to a university, an embassy or an employer. If you need proof of your English, you need an official test such as IELTS.
Do you save my answers?
No. Our website marks your answers and then forgets them. We don’t ask for your name, email or phone number.
Can I take the test again?
Yes. Each test picks different questions from a bank of 75, so taking it again isn’t simply repeating the same test.
Which course should I take after the test?
Your result shows the courses that fit your level: Spoken English or English Grammar for A1 and A2; Spoken English, IELTS Preparation or English Writing for B1; IELTS Preparation, Business English or English Writing for B2; and IELTS Preparation, Business English or University English for C1. Every course is one-to-one and starts with a free 30-minute demo class.
